Any attempt to extend Mohsin Naqvi’s term as president of the Asian Cricket Council, which is scheduled to end on April 2, 2027, is almost guaranteed to fail. It is anticipated that at least three, if not four, of the five ACC Full Members will be against an extension, making it nearly impossible for the Executive Board to get the necessary near-unanimous agreement.

On April 3, 2025, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, became president of the ACC. Any extension would require approval from the Executive Board, which includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.

The president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Tamim Iqbal, is rumoured to be eager to assume the position after Naqvi’s term ends. Bangladesh is next in line for the ACC presidency rotation.

Why is Mohsin Naqvi’s extension so unlikely?

Extensions of the president’s term are permitted by the ACC constitution, but only with unanimous consent from the Executive Board. Given the current political environment surrounding Asian cricket, that barrier has not been reached. The two-year term of the ACC president is rotated among the Full Members; the term itself is unrelated to the ACC Annual General Meeting.

The ACC’s full members alternate for the two-year term of the president. Sometimes the Executive Board must reach a unanimous decision to extend an extension, but in the present ACC Executive Board, this is not the case. According to an ACB official, “there is little chance of unanimity, at least on the subject of extension to Naqvi, going by recent turn of events.”

Two well-known prize disputes are part of the recent turn of events mentioned. On September 28, 2025, the India men’s team declined to take the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi; it is still locked in the ACC offices in Dubai. Following their victory over Sri Lanka in 2026, the India Women also declined to collect the Women’s Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi. The board’s divides have widened as a result of these instances.

Jay Shah’s 2024 precedent demonstrates how the current environment differs. Members of the ACC unanimously elected Shah to a third term as president that year, and Sri Lanka willingly gave up its turn. There doesn’t seem to be any such goodwill for a Naqvi extension.

The procedural concern is whether Bangladesh will formally take over as president after Naqvi’s term expires in April 2027. According to the rotation system, Bangladesh is verified as the next in line, and Tamim is reportedly excited about the position. Naqvi’s term expires in April 2027, though there may be conjecture.

Members of the ACC believe that Tamim is eager to take over in Bangladesh, which is next in line. Naqvi can contend that elections for other ACC seats were only held in August of this year and that the AGM was only held in August of last year. However, the AGM is unrelated to the ACC president’s tenure,” the source continued.

The Asian Under-19 Women’s Championship, which India has won twice and will take place in Bangladesh in December 2026, is the next ACC event that has been confirmed. The men’s Asia Cup will take place in Bangladesh in June 2027, following the expiration of Naqvi’s tenure and, assuming the rotation goes according to plan, under a new ACC president.
