After a nearly four-year hiatus from international cricket, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been included in India’s T20I squad for the five-match series against New Zealand. The squad was revealed by the BCCI senior selection committee on October 6, 2026, after a selection meeting took place between October 5 and 11.
Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina responded positively to the news, congratulating his former Uttar Pradesh teammate on the recall on social media. Before both Raina and Bhuvneshwar Kumar represented India at the highest level, they shared a dressing room for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket.
Bhuvi, welcome back! 🌮🌳💙 I’m thrilled that one of India’s best and most talented bowlers is once again receiving recognition. His perseverance, diligence, and discipline over the years are incredibly motivating. This return to the Indian T20 team is well-deserved, having gone from Uttar Pradesh to the IPL. 👏 Continue to motivate, @BhuviOfficial In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Raina wrote, “Your journey is a reminder that hard work always finds its way back. 🙌🏽🇮🇳.”
What justifies Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recall to India?
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is 36 years old and was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on February 5, 1990. This recall is his first in the format in nearly four years, having last played for India in T20I cricket on November 22, 2022, against New Zealand.
His comeback to national prominence was largely attributed to his IPL 2026 performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Bhuvneshwar contributed to the RCB’s title defence by taking 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95 during the competition. He was once again considered for international selection because of that form.
Bhuvneshwar has played in 87 T20I matches for India, taking 90 wickets at an economy rate of 6.96 and an average of 23.10. These statistics highlight his long-term reliability as a white-ball bowler.

Starting on October 22, 2026, at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval, the five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand will last until November 1, 2026. Tilak Varma has been named vice captain, and Shreyas Iyer will lead the team.
Considering his age and length of absence from the format, Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion is one of the squad’s more noteworthy choices. His comeback gives India a diverse bowling attack for the series in New Zealand, especially when combined with younger pace options like Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh.
