West Indies pacer Roston Chase’s bowling performance, according to India coach Gautam Gambhir, was the crucial factor that determined the outcome of the game. During India’s innings, Chase took three wickets for 24 runs, eliminating important batsmen and limiting the scoring phase when India could have amassed a higher total. Chase’s tactical strategy and the way he executed his variations on a Ranchi pitch that provided movement and bounce were the main focus of Gambhir’s evaluation.

On October 9, 2026, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, the West Indies achieved a record-breaking chase, surpassing India’s 249 for five with 252 for four wickets in 18.3 overs. The five-match T20I series is now tied at one after the victory. Sherfane Rutherford scored 84 in a 120-run partnership that proved crucial in the chase, while Shai Hope remained undefeated at 102. The combined total of 501 runs over 38.3 overs was the second-highest in the history of the men’s Twenty20 International.

Roston Chase’s spell was a game-changing, match-winning spell if you consider the game’s context. On this wicket, the way he altered his lines was crucial. However, we must figure out how to protect totals against formidable teams like the West Indies,” Gambhir stated at the press conference following the game.

Gautam Gambhir identified West Indies pacer Roston Chase’s bowling performance

Gambhir went into detail about the particular bowling strategies that helped Chase outperform India’s batting lineup. During the pivotal middle overs of India’s innings, Chase’s ability to change up his strategy kept the Indian batsmen guessing and prevented them from developing a rhythm, according to the India coach. To make the batters guess, you must constantly switch up your lines. They can settle in if you continue to bowl with the same line and length. He bowled wide, full, and at the batters’ legs. He kept altering his strategy, and on wickets like these, those changes are crucial,” Gambhir remarked.

Gambhir accepted the West Indies’ better batting performance despite the defeat and declined to offer justifications for India’s failure to hold their total. He emphasised that it was India’s bowling and fielding units’ duty to perform better against elite opposition, especially when defending a score higher than 240 in Twenty20 International cricket. I’m not blaming anything or anyone. Ultimately, we were unable to defend 250. They deserved to win because they batted so brilliantly. Gambhir stated, “We still have a lot of work to do.”

In addition, Gambhir addressed Sherfane Rutherford’s dropped catch during the West Indies’ chase, pointing out that fielding errors are unavoidable in cricket and shouldn’t be the main source of criticism. He emphasised that the team should concentrate on variables under their control and enhance their performance in subsequent games. You are not in control of the toss. Dropped catches have occurred in the past and will continue to occur in the future. You can’t blame anyone for intentionally dropping catches,” Gambhir remarked.

Gambhir discussed India’s tactics during the game and the calibre of the West Indies’ batting performance when asked if 250 was a safe total in contemporary Twenty20 International cricket. He admitted that although India had taken early wickets and amassed what appeared to be a competitive score, West Indies’ aggressive strategy and Hope and Rutherford’s partnership were too potent to contain. I’m not sure if there’s a safe total. After taking two early wickets, we felt that 250 was a respectable score. However, the West Indies deserve praise for their batting accomplishments,” Gambhir remarked.
