The first confirmed member of head coach Stephen Fleming‘s backroom staff will be Eric Simons, who will serve as England’s Test bowling coach. The announcement is anticipated on Monday, October 11, when England is scheduled to make their most recent central contract announcement.
The 64-year-old Eric Simons has a strong coaching background. Before turning to coaching, he played in 23 ODIs for South Africa in 1994 and 1995. From 2002 to 2004, he was the head coach of South Africa. From January 2010 to February 2012, he was the bowling coach for India.
Eric Simons’ appointment comes after England reorganized their head coaching structure earlier this year, with Brendon McCullum continuing to oversee the white-ball formats and Fleming taking charge of the Test team. The December 2026 series against South Africa will be Fleming’s first task as head coach of the England Test team.
What is the foundation of the working relationship between Eric Simons and Stephen Fleming?
Through several franchise contests, the two men have developed a strong professional relationship. Simons and Fleming worked together at the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, and the Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20 league. Eric Simons’s introduction into the England Test environment is thought to have been largely influenced by his experience gained from three different competitions.
The appointment also calls into question the current bowling support system. Tim Southee, who was previously England’s fast-bowling consultant, might make a comeback to the lineup later in the winter, indicating a gradual rather than a direct replacement. During McCullum’s tenure, both the white-ball and Test teams used James Anderson and David Saker as fast-bowling consultants.

Recent changes to England’s white-ball coaching structure have coincided with changes in the Test camp. In anticipation of the 50-over World Cup that will take place in southern Africa, white-ball teams have hired Kevin Pietersen as a batting consultant. For the Pakistan series, Marcus Trescothick took over as interim Test head coach; however, his longer-term involvement has not been confirmed.
David Saker is still involved in the England team; he is currently a member of the coaching staff for this month’s white-ball tri-series in Pakistan. With Simons’ confirmation as bowling coach serving as the first official step ahead of the December 2026 series against South Africa, Monday’s central contracts announcement is anticipated to provide additional clarity on the complete makeup of Fleming’s Test backroom team.
