Prior to the first Test on Tuesday, October 27, captain Najmul Hossain spoke to the media and emphasized that the team’s attention is still on the current task rather than the larger championship picture. Najmul Hossain claimed that he was not thinking about the second match and was only focused on the first.
As they get ready to play the West Indies in a two-match series that will begin on October 28 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh is ranked fourth in the World Test Championship standings. The second Test in the series, which is a part of the WTC cycle, is set to start in Sylhet on November 5. In the current WTC cycle, Bangladesh has won three of its six Test matches, drawn one, and lost two, including their most recent 1-1 series in Australia.
Najmul Hossain’s approach to the series demonstrates a purposeful method of controlling expectations and staying focused on the current task. The captain of Bangladesh has repeatedly emphasized the value of focusing on a single game at a time rather than looking too far ahead in the championship cycle.
“As a team, we are constantly thinking about how we are going to play this match or this series” – Najmul Hossain
I’m not even considering the second game of the two-match series; I’m just thinking about this Test match. According to Najmul Hossain, “As a team, we are constantly thinking about how we are going to play this match or this series.”
The idea that Bangladesh’s fourth-place finish puts more pressure on the team was denied by Najmul. Rather, he presented the circumstance as a source of motivation for the team to strive for advancement in the longest format. The captain emphasized that there is no need to stray from the team’s established process because it has been producing results.
Being in the top four is inspiring to me, and I find it encouraging that situations like this are happening in Test cricket. I wouldn’t describe it as pressure because, ever since we started planning or talking about this series, we have been concentrating on how we have performed in Test cricket over the previous few series and, in fact, over the previous few years,” Najmul Hossain stated.
The team’s confidence in their capacity to compete at the top level was bolstered by Bangladesh’s August Test victory over Australia in Darwin. Before that victory, Najmul Hossain noted, the players had a strong desire to get better at Test cricket, and the Darwin victory has only strengthened their dedication to the format. Naturally, the players’ confidence and belief have increased after winning the Darwin Test. That is just to be expected.
However, Najmul Hossain stated that the players had already demonstrated a strong desire to get better in this format. Their desire to play this format is sincere. Since the victory, that desire has only grown. In addition, I have observed that players are more eager to find out when the next Test match will be played,” he continued.
The captain of Bangladesh also emphasized how the team is motivated by public support. He observed that the players are greatly inspired by the fervor surrounding Test cricket in the nation. The enthusiasm with which people anticipate Test cricket is also very encouraging. They discuss it while watching it. We can get a lot of inspiration from this. As I previously stated, if we can improve by an additional 20 to 30 percent from where we are now, it will improve our national team’s standing and, hopefully, we will accomplish even more,” Najmul Hossain stated.

On the eve of the first Test, player availability concerns surfaced. On Tuesday, October 27, Mushfiqur Rahim was hit in the hand while practicing at the BCB Academy. He was treated with ice before leaving the nets. At that point, it was still unclear how severe the injury was.
Litton Kumar Das, who is recuperating from a right hip-joint injury he suffered during a century he scored in Bangladesh’s second innings of a Test match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi earlier in October, was also being monitored by Bangladesh.
Najmul Hossain continued to have faith in both players’ chances for the first Test. He expressed optimism about the team’s participation while acknowledging that they were still awaiting final medical reports. Thus far, Litton is doing well. He also worked on his physical fitness this morning. However, we have yet to obtain the precise report from the trainer and physiotherapist.”Najmul Hossain said. “We hope for a good outcome, insha’Allah. He’ll play if everything is alright. However, I haven’t received the report yet, so I can’t say anything for sure,” he continued.
