Chris Gayle, regarded as one of the most destructive hitters in T20 history, has torn apart bowling attacks across the globe. Yet, despite holding the records for the fastest century and the most sixes in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, the self-styled “Universe Boss” has admitted that one bowler always troubled him: the legendary Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga.
Gayle’s record against Malinga tells a story of struggle; the Universe Boss scored 57 runs off 72 balls against the Mumbai Indians bowler in T20 matches and was dismissed once during their head-to-head encounters in the format.
“Facing him was extremely difficult” – Chris Gayle
In an interview with ‘Mid-Wicket Stories’, Chris said, “At that time, Malinga’s bowling action made him very difficult to face. He didn’t get me out often, but playing against his action was incredibly tough. I simply couldn’t get into the right position to hit him.”
Gayle explained that Malinga’s unique ‘sling-arm’ action completely disrupted his batting rhythm at the crease. Due to the release point and angle of the delivery, it became nearly impossible for the left-hander to position himself correctly to play his signature boundary-hitting shots. This challenge was further compounded by Malinga’s dangerous ‘dipping slower ball’; Gayle admitted that he could rarely pick that delivery from the bowler’s hand.

Gayle said, “So I thought, look, I need to stay at the crease, right? I just try to block—it’s a bit different for the ‘Universe Boss’—but I try to block or rotate the strike and then face the other bowlers. If I can’t quite read a bowler, I just try to play sensibly and safely.”
While Gayle concluded his magnificent IPL journey with 4,965 runs and an unmatched 357 sixes, Malinga left behind an equally impressive legacy, boasting 170 wickets and four titles with the Mumbai Indians.
