Simi Singh, a former spin-bowling all-rounder for the Ireland Men’s team, announced his retirement from professional cricket today.

Simi Singh announced his retirement from professional cricket

39-year-old Simi Singh was born in Bathlana, India. He relocated to Ireland in 2006 at the age of 19 in order to follow his dream of playing international cricket, and in May 2017 he made his debut against New Zealand.

Simi Singh went on to represent Ireland ninety times over the following five years. His highest bowling result was 5-10 against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, and he held the world record after scoring an ODI century at number eight (100*) against South Africa at Malahide in 2021.

Simi Singh was included in the Men’s ODI Team of the Year by the ICC in 2021. In the two white-ball formats, he had 85 wickets by the end of his career. He claimed 39 wickets in 34 ODI matches, with an economy rate of only 3.99.

Late in his career, Simi Singh—an aggressive middle-order batsman and off-spin bowler—added leg-spin to his arsenal in an effort to broaden his international involvement and add variation. He participated in all four of the First Round Group Stage matches in Hobart as a member of the Ireland Men’s team at the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Simi Singh became gravely ill in 2024 and had a successful liver transplant to save his life. He is doing well after a protracted recuperation period and is as eager as ever to move forward and pursue a new career after playing. He did, however, declare his professional cricket retirement today since he believed that his cricket career needed a formal conclusion.

As a 19-year-old, I travelled to Ireland with the goal of playing international cricket, and in retrospect, the experience has been nothing short of bizarre. I’m immensely appreciative of Ireland and everyone who encouraged, believed in, and assisted me during my journey. Without the love and encouragement of my family, who supported me at every turn, none of this would have been possible.

“I would especially like to express my gratitude to Alan Lewis, who was instrumental in both my personal and professional lives, particularly during my YMCA years. I will always be appreciative of his advice and encouragement. A great coach may also have a significant impact on a player, and Graham Ford was that coach for me. He was essential to my success and career.

“I will always hold a particular place in my heart for Ireland.” I will always be a proud fan of Irish cricket, and I hope the upcoming generation succeeds in reaching their full potential. Simi Singh was reported in a release as saying, “Thank you, Ireland. “You can’t help but respect Simi’s career in Ireland when you consider the sacrifices he took in pursuing his passion.

Over the years, Simi played with him numerous times, and it was evident how much playing for Ireland meant to him. More than his debut at Malahide, Simi cherished the momentous occasion. Given that Simi made his debut much later in his career—I believe he was 29 when he received his first cap—I believe he always had the motivation to maximise his opportunities, and a 90-cap career shows that he succeeded in doing so.

“We were all surprised to hear of Simi’s sickness and struggle for his life, but we are also happy that he is in a lot better place now and eager to see what his post-playing future holds. I hope Simi’s future endeavours go well. Head coach Gary Wilson, who also shared a dressing room with Simi Singh, stated, “Simi can be proud of his career and the role he played in Irish cricket. The senior squad will welcome him back when we see him.”
