Michael Bracewell, an all-rounder from New Zealand, has chosen not to sign a central contract for the 2026–2027 season in order to maintain his chances for white-ball cricket prospects abroad. The 35-year-old is anticipated to play in the Big Bash League after switching to a casual deal with New Zealand Cricket.

Michael Bracewell continues to play a significant role in New Zealand’s white-ball strategy despite the change in his contract status. He will be among the Blackcaps’ lightly contracted players, along with Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert.

Michael Bracewell is still devoted to New Zealand

Michael Bracewell’s choice coincides with New Zealand Cricket’s continued provision of more latitude for seasoned white-ball players who wish to participate in T20 tournaments abroad. The all-rounder is still available for New Zealand and is anticipated to play in the next five-match Twenty20 International series against India.

Michael Bracewell expressed his gratitude to New Zealand Cricket for enabling him to pursue options while upholding his dedication to the national team at this point in his career. The Times of India quoted Bracewell as saying, “It means a lot that New Zealand Cricket is supporting me to take this opportunity at this stage of my career.”

The 35-year-old, who now concentrates only on white-ball cricket, feels the chance was too good to pass up. Additionally, he clarified that his decision to sign a casual contract will not have an impact on his dedication to the Blackcaps. This seemed like too fantastic of an opportunity to pass up as a white-ball exclusively player. I still have a strong commitment to the Blackcaps, and I’m excited to play in the next white-ball series and the forthcoming tour to India.”

Additionally, Michael Bracewell is eager to play in the next domestic Twenty20 tournament in New Zealand. He is anticipated to be ready starting next summer for the first-ever NZ20 competition.

Nick Kelly, a batter from the Northern Districts, has been given his first New Zealand contract as a result of Michael Bracewell’s departure from the central contract list.

Eleven years after making his first-class debut, Kelly signed his first national contract. Since making his debut for New Zealand in March 2025, the 33-year-old has played in seven Twenty20 Internationals and eight One-Day Internationals. Earlier this year, he replaced the injured Tom Latham and captained New Zealand in two Twenty20 Internationals against Bangladesh.

Following an outstanding tenure with Leicestershire, where he amassed 950 runs across forms, Kelly joins the contractual group. Additionally, he scored his sixth List A century against Middlesex in the One Day Cup final.

Rob Walter, the head coach of New Zealand, who spent two seasons working with Kelly at Otago, thinks the batter has earned the chance because of his steady domestic cricket performances. Walter stated, “Nick has been a standout player in domestic cricket for a number of seasons, and his hard work has earned him this first contract at this stage of his career.”

Additionally, Walter thinks Kelly might benefit from his comparatively late entry to international cricket. The batter has the experience to manage pressure at the top level because he has previously spent several years honing his craft. There are benefits to introducing guys like Nick to international cricket a little later, he continued, including the player’s familiarity with the game and confidence in their ability to produce under duress.

With three fifties in his previous four ODIs, Kelly has improved his case for a regular spot in New Zealand’s white-ball lineup. Walter has also been impressed by his wealth of domestic and international cricket expertise.

Considered one of the top fielders in the nation, the batter from the Northern Districts has participated in over 300 professional games. Walter thinks he will be a useful addition to the contractual group because of those attributes. With his exploits against Bangladesh and the West Indies in often difficult batting conditions, Nick raised his hand. He is one of the top fielders in the nation and has more than 300 professional games under his belt, so he adds a lot to our contracted group,” Walter stated.
