Andrew McDonald, the head coach of Cricket Australia’s men’s team, is currently in talks with the organization about a possible contract extension that would keep him on the team past the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The timing of these talks is especially important because Australia will be defending their ODI World Cup title at that competition.
Since April 13, 2022, McDonald has been the head coach permanently. Before a prior extension extended his tenure until the end of the 2027 cycle, his initial four-year contract was set to expire in the middle of 2026. As the team navigates a period of transition, the most recent discussions show that Cricket Australia is eager to plan further ahead.
The game was fortunate to have McDonald and chair of selectors George Bailey working together, and they had done an amazing job, according to outgoing CA chair Mike Baird, who spoke positively about the coaching partnership in place. Since August 2021, Bailey has been the chair of selectors. Together, the two managed Australia’s 2023 World Test Championship and ODI World Cup.
What has CA said about the future of Andrew McDonald’s?
Todd Greenberg, the CEO of CA, made it apparent that the board values McDonald’s contribution by publicly confirming that contract negotiations are in progress. With a decisive match against South Africa in Cape Town still to be played as part of a lengthy period in the format, Greenberg’s remarks came as Australia is currently ranked first in the Test rankings.
Indeed, we are discussing Andrew’s contractual status and the implications for the future. The Cricket Australia board and all of us have a great deal of respect for him. Greenberg was quoted as saying, “I think he’s done an outstanding job, and I think his results tell you that.”
Michael Di Venuto, Daniel Vettori, and Andre Borovec are members of McDonald’s coaching staff, who have supported him during the Australian men’s team’s consistent success since 2022.
Executives at Cricket Australia have stated that they are carefully considering the squad’s medium-term shape in addition to the immediate issue of McDonald’s contract. Although the players in the current group are thought to be among the best to have ever represented Australia, the organization is aware that retirements will eventually change the lineup.

For the next six, twelve, eighteen, and twenty-four months, we are having in-depth discussions about how this team will function. We are in a very fortunate position because we have some of the greatest players in history in our generation. However, once their playing days are over, we’ll keep an eye on that. We’re not sure when that will happen, but naturally, we need to keep an eye on the transition,” Greenberg continued.
CA wants to make sure that appropriate oversight is in place to safeguard the program through its next phase, regardless of who may ultimately lead it, and that the coaching staff has been specifically tasked with managing this generational transition. There is currently no confirmed timeline for the conclusion of the contract negotiations.
