On Sunday, October 11, India’s explosive top-order batter Abhishek Sharma etched his name in the record books. He became the fastest player in men’s T20 International (T20I) cricket to reach the 2,000-run mark in terms of balls faced. The aggressive left-hander achieved this feat during the third T20I against the West Indies in Indore, reaching the milestone in just 1,024 balls.

With this achievement, Abhishek surpassed the previous world record held by his compatriot Suryakumar Yadav, who had reached 2,000 runs in 1,164 balls. Former Australian captain Aaron Finch now sits third on the list, having faced 1,283 balls—259 more than Abhishek’s new record.
What makes this achievement special is the metric used to measure it. Gauging the 2,000-run milestone based on balls faced rather than innings played directly highlights a rapid scoring rate. Abhishek bettered Suryakumar’s record by 140 balls, underscoring his consistent attacking intent and ability to hit boundaries in the shortest format of the game.

Since making his international debut against Zimbabwe on July 6, 2024, Abhishek has rapidly emerged as one of modern cricket’s most dangerous openers. A testament to his sensational form is the magnificent 135 runs he scored off just 54 balls against England in 2025—the highest individual score by an Indian batter in T20I history. As for the match, Abhishek Sharma scored 69 runs off 30 balls—hitting 5 sixes and 6 fours at a strike rate of 230—before eventually getting out.
