On Sunday, September 27, South Africa’s second ODI against Australia at the Wanderers will mark Aiden Markram‘s comeback to international cricket. The Proteas won the first ODI in Durban on Thursday by 67 runs, giving them a 1-0 series lead. As part of Pink Day, the match raises awareness of breast cancer.

Aiden Markram’s absence from international cricket dates back to March, when South Africa lost to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semifinal in Kolkata. Since coming back from The Hundred in early August, he has not participated in any cricket matches because of personal concerns. Markram spent hours in the nets at Tshwane University and trained with the provincial union Titans in order to prepare for the comeback.

Aiden Markram agreed that no other type of training provides the same level of preparation as match practice. He understood the impact of his prolonged break from professional cricket and how it would affect how he approached the match. You’ll need to go outside for a while.

At first, it could feel a little “French,” but ideally when I get through that phase, I can start to feel more at ease.” Times Live reported that Markram said: Prep is not the same as match practice. I see that I haven’t participated in a cricket match in a while. One feels thrilled, but it’s also important to acknowledge it, which will influence how I handle things tomorrow,” Aiden Markram stated.

Aiden Markram’s performance versus Australia gives him hope for his comeback. He averages 38.15 in 14 ODI matches against Australia, which is marginally higher than his 37.09 ODI average overall. With three of his eight Test hundreds coming against Australia, Aiden Markram averages over 60 in Test cricket.

According to Aiden Markram, the Australian squad is a formidable foe who pulls out the best in both teams. He emphasized the need of challenging oneself against such opposition and the fierce competition that defines games between the two countries. In terms of personality and presence, Australians are comparable to us.

Both teams enjoy feeling like they are engaged in combat, experiencing the intensity and rivalry, and it brings out the best in them. From a player’s perspective, it’s a really thrilling game and series to be a part of, and it makes for a fairly nice spectacle to witness,” Aiden Markram remarked.

Despite not playing in the inaugural ODI in Durban, Pat Cummins is still Australia’s official ODI captain. It would only be Cummins’ third ODI since the 2023 World Cup final if he plays at the Wanderers. Markram recognized that the Australian speed attack—especially Cummins, whose zeal seldom wanes throughout a game—poses a persistent threat. He never leaves.

Particularly in Test cricket, you may occasionally sense that bowlers may begin to struggle when you spend some time at the crease during the third or fourth spell, but with Pat, it’s always the same. Markram remarked, “There is skill behind that character. There’s a lot of energy on the ball and he bashes away at a good spot and he will definitely find anything in the wicket.”

After taking a long sabbatical from international cricket, Aiden Markram realized that playing against Australia would be a great way to evaluate his form and preparedness. He pointed out that players who would switch to the Test format later in the tour might gain confidence from the ODI series. The 31-year-old said, “There may be confidence to take for the guys who will carry over to the Test format.”
