In order to boost England’s Ashes preparations, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has stated that it will take into consideration the rare step of financing a women’s Test in the West Indies in the spring of 2027. The Test in the Caribbean is set to take place prior to England’s attempt to reclaim the Ashes from Australia as part of a multi-format series that was announced in 2024.

Last week, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a number of cost-cutting initiatives, including player contract reductions. The West Indies were scheduled to host a women’s Test against Australia in March 2026, but the white-ball portion of the tour proceeded as planned.

Richard Thompson, the chair of the ECB, expressed his hope that the Test will go ahead and that it won’t be postponed. There have been no talks between the ECB and CWI over postponing the Test, according to BBC Sport. Although the dates and locations are still pending, the visit as a whole, which includes three Twenty20 matches and three one-day internationals in April and May 2027, is not in jeopardy.

We want the Test match to continue. We need a strong red-ball warm-up since the Headingley Test is our first women’s match in the Ashes, so this is crucial. We have to play somewhere, and the West Indies would be our first choice. We all wish for a prosperous West Indian nation and have a great deal of compassion for the West Indies. According to BBC Sport, Tompson stated, “They have very specific challenges, and I hope through the International Cricket Council and others we can find a way through this.”

For what reason is the ECB thinking of funding the Test?

Usually, governing bodies have reciprocal agreements whereby the home board pays the visiting team’s travel and lodging costs. The cost of transporting players between islands in the West Indies raises these expenses. Last week, CWI reported that during the previous 15 years, it has spent over $80 million on domestic flight travel.

The ECB paid the visitors a touring fee during the Zimbabwe men’s team’s Test match in England last year, which Thompson cited as an equally uncommon circumstance. When it was suggested to Thompson that the ECB could have to provide money in order for the Test to be conducted, he said that his organization would investigate the matter if it came up.

The fixture’s historical significance strengthens the ECB’s stance. West Indies haven’t played a Test match against any opponent since a trip to Pakistan in 2004, and England hasn’t faced them in a women’s Test since 1979. For both teams, the scheduled 2027 game would close gaps of more than 40 years.

England is making tremendous preparations for the women’s Ashes in 2027. The England team will participate in a ten-day red-ball training camp in India in January 2027. Before the Ashes series starts, competitive red-ball cricket would be available during the West Indies Test in the spring of 2027.

Since losing every Ashes match in early 2025, England has only played one Test match—a loss to India at Lord’s earlier in 2026. As a result, the West Indies tour offers a great chance to practise matches under Test conditions. Plans are also being prepared for domestic players who may play red-ball cricket in the early 2027 season.

The only Test match planned for next summer north of Nottingham is the inaugural women’s Ashes match, which will take place at Headingley in June 2027. Before the Ashes in 2023, England played Australia A and Australia played England A as warm-up Test matches; this arrangement might be repeated in 2027.
