On September 27, 2026, India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram. Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm spinner, was crucial in limiting the visitors. West Indies chose to bat and had a potent opening partnership of 135 runs, but Kuldeep’s four-wicket haul for 40 runs in ten overs destroyed their innings and won him Player of the Match. With 50 balls left, India’s pursuit was finished thanks to a 151-run partnership between Virat Kohli and captain Shubman Gill.

Kuldeep Yadav was crucial in limiting the visitors

After the West Indies gained momentum with their first stand, Kuldeep’s effort was crucial in changing the course of the game. The spinner caused a collapse of 4 for 22 from 176 for 1, taking four of the first five wickets.

Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Justin Greaves right away after he reached his first ODI century with 101 runs off 108 balls, and he then hit Jewel Andrew for a duck with the very next delivery. John Campbell and Shai Hope were two of his other major victims.

India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets thanks in large part to Kuldeep Yadav, especially after the visitors got off to a fast start with the bat. With vital wickets in the middle overs, the spinner halted the West Indies top order’s momentum and assisted India in recovering after they looked destined for a much higher score.

Gill emphasised Kuldeep’s capacity to produce breakthroughs in the middle overs and gave him credit for reviving India in the match when the West Indies were leading. Gill was reported by Outlook as saying, “Someone like him, especially in the middle overs, if he’s bowling well, he’s a wicket-taker for us and he’s proven over and over again, including today.

The captain of India acknowledged that the hosts were under pressure during the first partnership, but he thought Kuldeep’s spell altered the innings’ momentum. Additionally, he highlighted how India was able to limit the West Indies to 300 when it appeared that they could score between 340 and 350.Because of their opening partnership and the way their top order was batting, we were a little behind, but he got us back in the game and gave us vital wickets. At one point, it appeared as though they might reach 340–350, but we made a fantastic effort to keep them to 300,” Gill remarked.

Kuldeep Yadav, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction with his rhythm and talked about how he concentrated on changing his tempo and observing the batters during his stint. Honestly, I liked my rhythm. Kuldeep remarked, “I was very composed in my rhythm and just trying to bowl whatever I felt like bowling, just varying the pace, variations were superb, just reading the batters, where they’re going to hit me.”

Even though West Indies were limited to 300, captain Shai Hope believed his team still managed to score runs. In his opinion, the visitors were perhaps 60 to 80 runs short of what would have been a competitive score in India on a good batting surface. We could undoubtedly score more runs. You have to make sure you score well when you come in on surfaces like the nice ones in India. To be truthful, we were about 60 to 80 runs short,” Hope remarked.

Kohli’s aggressive 139 from 88 balls and Gill’s undefeated 110 made sure India’s pursuit was finished with little opposition. With 50 balls remaining, India won by reaching 300 for 2 thanks to the two batsmen’s stand, which eliminated nearly every plausible way for the West Indies to return to the game.
