Former Indian cricket player Ajinkya Rahane, who captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2026 Indian Premier League, has joined calls to do away with the Impact Player rule. Numerous cricket players have criticised the rule, which permits teams to switch players after the toss, for its effects on player growth and game dynamics.
Citing the rule’s detrimental effects on the growth of all-rounders in Indian cricket, Rahane stated his opinion that it should be completely eliminated from the league’s framework. His stance is in line with more general worries about India’s cricket pipeline’s lack of fast-bowling all-rounders, which has grown more noticeable in recent years. Ajinkya Rahane stated, “I think it should be taken out.”
Why Ajinkya Rahane thinks the rule ought to be repealed
The former captain of KKR recalled conversations about the future of the rule among IPL captains. He clarified that prior to a captains’ meeting last year, the majority of captains had voiced their disapproval of the Impact Player rule. Rahane pointed out that it’s unclear if the IPL will repeal the rule this year or following the next big auction because the current guidelines extend its application until 2027.
Prior to the IPL captains’ meeting last year, I recall that the majority of the captains expressed opposition to the impact player rule. Additionally, I believe that the regulations will be in effect until 2027. Therefore, we are unsure if they will remove it this year or later, when the major auction is scheduled to take place. But ideally, I don’t see the need for an impact rule,” Rahane stated.

The rule’s impact on the growth of all-rounders in Indian cricket is Rahane’s main worry. He emphasised how important all-rounders are to the structure of the national team and how the Impact Player rule diminishes their value in the league. Rahane gave specific instances from the previous season in which teams in challenging situations, like 90 for 7 or 100 for 7, were able to reach 200 runs by adding a batter to the innings under the Impact Player rule. Particularly in the IPL, all-rounders are becoming obsolete.
Additionally, I really think that you need to develop your all-around players. All-rounders are crucial from the perspective of the Indian team. Rahane stated that the impact player rule ought to be removed.
Rahane argued for a change in the league’s strategy that would guarantee all-rounders play more significant roles in games and give bowlers a bigger advantage. His stance is in line with more general worries about the dearth of fast-bowling all-rounders in India’s cricket pipeline, which has grown more noticeable in recent years.
