As the Proteas get ready for yet another significant test in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma thinks the forthcoming Test series against Australia will bring out the best in both teams.

South Africa is scheduled to host Australia before playing England later in the summer after defeating India in India during the current WTC cycle. As South Africa looks to build on their success in the longest format, a number of players, including Temba Bavuma, may find the upcoming assignments to be crucial.

Over the years, a number of fiercely contested matches have resulted from the rivalry between South Africa and Australia. The two teams have played nine Test series over the past 20 years, with four victories apiece; the 2011–12 series in South Africa ended in a draw. Australia was also defeated by South Africa in the WTC final in 2025.

Because of the rivalry’s intensity and history, Temba Bavuma feels that playing Australia gives them an additional competitive advantage. When you play against Australia, you are not just playing against those people; you are playing against what it means to be an Australian. We always eagerly anticipate the confrontation. Both teams’ competitive advantages are typically highlighted, at the very least. We really want to defeat them,” Temba Bavuma stated.

Although he acknowledged Australia’s long-standing dominance, the South African captain insisted that his team would gain confidence from their recent victory over them. We respect them greatly, but we also take pride in the fact that we have overcome them. They are respected because they have been so dominant over the years,” he continued.

Temba Bavuma anticipates that the series will feature multiple individual battles, especially between the opposing batting units and the two bowling attacks. There will be big moments and big battles on the actual pitch. There are chances for guys to take each other on and truly make the play for the team, whether it’s their batting attack, our bowling attack, or their bowling attack versus what our batting attack can accomplish. The WTC final proved it.

In South Africa, Temba Bavuma emphasises the value of fast bowling

South Africa’s triumph over Australia in the 2025 World Cup final demonstrated their capacity to contend with one of the top Test teams in the world. The Proteas overcame a 74-run first-innings deficit and successfully chased down a difficult target at Lord’s, despite coming into the match as the underdogs.

According to Temba Bavuma, the calibre of South African fast bowlers should remain one of the sport’s defining traits. The Proteas have called up Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee to bolster their pace attack despite the fact that the forthcoming series will be played at slower coastal venues.

Coetzee last played in Test cricket two years ago, and Nortje is making his comeback after more than three years away. They will be in the same bowling group as Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch from South Africa. Reintroducing the fast bowler element is part of it. When visiting South Africa, nations or athletes need to be aware that they will encounter fast bowling, according to Temba Bavuma.

Temba Bavuma also discussed how South Africa is trying to strike a balance between individual interests and the team’s overarching goals, as well as the shifting priorities of contemporary cricketers.

Players like Nortje and Quinton de Kock, who have prioritised franchise cricket at various points in time, and Simon Harmer, who previously accepted a Kolpak deal, continue to be discussed in relation to player availability.

Temba Bavuma, however, maintained that South Africa’s strategy is to choose the best players available rather than cling to grudges. We acknowledge the existence of individual interests. The cricket world has changed over the past ten years. Then, the feeling of representing your nation was the best. These days, the interests are slightly different.

Despite those shifting priorities, the South Africa captain continued, the team is still committed to finding common ground. We find a way to embrace whatever our shared goal as a team is despite all of that.”

South Africa has a significant chance to further solidify their position as one of the world’s best Test teams, with Australia and England remaining in the current WTC cycle. Temba Bavuma’s team’s ability to maintain their recent success against the biggest names in Test cricket may be put to the test again in the forthcoming Australia series.
