Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged that stepping down after leading the Indian team for several years was not an easy decision. She stated that she often prioritized the team’s needs over her individual ambitions and personal growth.
She wrote on Instagram, “Today, I am stepping down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats. This is not an easy decision. It encompasses years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for a lifetime. I have given everything to this team and to Indian women’s cricket—my blood, sweat, time, and often, parts of my own game and personal ambitions. There were times when I had to set aside my personal performance, my growth, and what I desired for myself, because I believed the team had to come first.”

Her key achievements as captain include leading India to its maiden Women’s Cricket World Cup title in 2025 and securing multiple Women’s Asia Cup victories (2012, 2016, and 2022).
Harmanpreet Kaur’s final tournament as captain concluded on a high note at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, where India won the gold medal by defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final. Despite facing challenging phases—such as the group-stage exit at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup—this final tournament proved to be a fitting conclusion to a magnificent era.
