In advance of the 2026–2027 Big Bash League season, England wicketkeeper-batter Aneurin Donald signed a contract with Perth Scorchers, providing the reigning champions with a potent top-order option as they reorganize their roster.
Aneurin Donald has agreed to a one-year contract that covers full availability, including the finals, after making his T20 international debut last month. Together with fellow England international Zak Crawley, the 29-year-old is the most recent foreign addition to the Scorchers’ roster.
Perth’s decision to sign both Aneurin Donald and Crawley comes after Melbourne Stars signed Kiwi batsman Finn Allen last month for an enormous three-year contract that is reportedly worth more than half a million dollars in its first season. The Scorchers won their historic sixth men’s Big Bash title in January thanks to Allen’s tournament-high 466 runs, but the right-hander decided not to return to Western Australia after the team was unable to match the Stars’ attractive offer.
Josh Inglis, a three-time BBL champion, also chose not to re-sign with the Scorchers during the nine-day player movement window that followed their January championship. While Aneurin Donald has already signed his first BBL contract, the 83-game Scorchers veteran has not committed to the team since a contracting embargo was lifted in August.
Why did Aneurin Donald join the Perth Scorchers?
The Scorchers acted swiftly to fill the void created by Inglis’s ongoing absence from the contracted list as well as Allen’s departure. The club now has a wicketkeeper-batter who can bat aggressively at the top of the order thanks to Donald’s arrival, and his one-year contract with full finals availability makes him a comparable replacement for Inglis.
More than 12 years ago, Welsh-born Aneurin Donald, a native of Swansea, made his first-class debut for county side Glamorgan. But in the T20 format, he has really established himself. In the T20 Blast this year, Donald scored 489 runs at a strike rate of 230.66 while playing for his current county, Derbyshire. Only three players have surpassed his total of 938 runs in the last two Blast tournaments combined: James Vince (1038), Will Smeed (1015), and D’Arcy Short (997).
In this year’s The Hundred, Donald also made an impression, hitting 38 off 19 balls for Trent Rockets in the Lord’s final. In Southampton, where he played in every game of their 3-0 T20I series victory over Sri Lanka, those performances earned him his first England cap. Since then, he has been included in England’s T20I team for five matches against Australia in November and December, which are set to take place prior to the start of the men’s Big Bash.
“Having Aneurin join our BBL team this season excites us greatly. He demonstrated great promise while playing for Trent Rockets during The Hundred and again for England in the T20I series that followed against Sri Lanka. In an official statement, Scorchers general manager Kade Harvey said, “I’m sure our members and fans will enjoy seeing Aneurin’s aggressive style of batting on full display at ‘The Furnace’ this season.”

Aneurin Donald joins the Scorchers team, which head coach Adam Voges has now restricted to 15 of the 18 players on the main roster, including the maximum of three international players. Joel Curtis, a native of Western Australia, has also been added to the BBL roster, giving the team two wicketkeeping options for the upcoming season. Donald and Crawley will play this summer alongside fellow English import Calvin Harrison.
The Scorchers may field an all-England opening partnership this season since Crawley is already in the squad to replace Allen at the top of the order. One of Voges’ most important decisions before BBL|16 will be where Australia T20I captain Mitch Marsh fits in a top order that is now full of options.
