Richard Pybus, the team’s head coach, was pleased with the team’s overall performance as well as the players’ acceptance of their roles during the competition. Pybus emphasized how the team built on the positive momentum from a recent series in Ireland by showing consistency and adaptability throughout all three games. The side is in a good place, in my opinion. We just finished a successful series in Ireland. Our goal is to construct a side that can adjust to various circumstances. We must create a side that can function everyplace in the world. According to Richard Pybus, “I believe we’re beginning to get some depth in the squad and guys turning up and putting the performances in.”
On October 23, 2026, Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe by 7 wickets in the final at Sharjah, capping an impressive tri-series campaign. Over the course of five days, the team won three games, including a 7-wicket victory against Bangladesh and a 158-run victory over Zimbabwe in the group stage on October 21. Afghanistan won the tournament with a comprehensive performance, chasing down Zimbabwe’s total with 93 balls left in the final.
Afghanistan’s tri-series campaign was outstanding in each of the three games. After defeating Zimbabwe by 158 runs in the group stage, the team defeated Bangladesh by 7 wickets before defeating Zimbabwe by 7 wickets in the final with 93 balls remaining. Throughout the competition, Pybus emphasized how players took responsibility for their specific roles.
I believe we witnessed it in Ireland and again in this series, where guys are really getting into their work when we sit down as a team and plan for guys to take responsibility for their position in the team. They are not taking responsibility for other players to fill in for them when they have failed to fulfilll their role’s requirements. That’s quite satisfying,” Pybus remarked.
What did Richard Pybus say about the progress of the team?
The head coach admitted that Afghanistan had trouble getting regular opportunities to play the best teams in the world. He pointed out the caliber of the team’s opponents and the significance of this exposure for long-term growth. We don’t have the same opportunities as some of the other full-member teams to regularly play the best teams, which is, in my opinion, extremely important for our team’s growth.I don’t want to take anything away from our guys because we know that Bangladesh is a very dangerous team and Zimbabwe defeated Bangladesh with a really strong performance,” Pybus stated.
Pybus was impressed by Captain Rahmat Shah’s leadership and commended his inclusive style and composed manner during the competition. Pybus noted that Shah set the tone for the team’s success by combining outstanding batting performances with strong captaincy. As captain, he’s been fantastic. He’s a very composed, confident player. He has a subdued authority. He pays attention to his senior teammates. He’s very inclusive, which makes his team happy, and he promotes involvement from everyone on the team, whether we’re planning, preparing, or performing on the field,” Richard Pybus stated.
Rahmat’s batting performance matched his captaincy quality, Pybus emphasized.Turning up and carrying that responsibility with the bat is, in my opinion, equally important for a captain, and he’s been outstanding,” Richard Pybus continued.

Before the tri-series, the head coach mentioned Rahmat’s recent performance in Test matches. We witnessed it in Ireland and during his outstanding performance in the Test match. Because of batting in the fourth innings, Sediqullah’s [Sediqullah Atal] performance, and the team’s overall performance, his performance during the Test match didn’t receive the credit it deserved, but he was exceptional with his century and fifty,” Richard Pybus said.
Since replacing Hashmatullah Shahidi as captain, Rahmat Shah has won seven straight ODI matches and has never lost. Pybus was confident in the captain’s ability to lead in the future as he thought back on this incredible run.Winning seven straight. It won’t always be as lovely as that, but he’s off to a really fantastic start, and I have no doubt that he will continue to inspire and lead the team in a positive manner,” Richard Pybus stated.
