Chennai Super Kings’ new head coach, Zaheer Khan is preparing for a crucial meeting with MS Dhoni in Mumbai. This significant discussion is taking place ahead of the November 15 deadline for player retentions. Having failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions are now planning major changes to their squad.
Zaheer Khan is preparing for a crucial meeting with MS Dhoni in Mumbai
Following his initial meeting with the team management in Chennai, Zaheer Khan is visiting Mumbai to deliberate with MS Dhoni on the strategy for retaining and releasing players. The decisions made during this discussion will directly determine the budget CSK will have available to acquire players in the upcoming mini-auction.
Through this auction, the franchise aims to rebuild and strengthen its core squad—particularly regarding its overseas contingent, whose performances have fallen short of expectations over the last two seasons.
In addition to player retentions, Chennai Super Kings is revamping its backroom staff. Several coaches who had long been associated with the Stephen Fleming era—including Michael Hussey, Eric Simons, and Rajiv Kumar—have parted ways with the team.
Under Zaheer’s new leadership, former England batter Gareth Batty and former CSK player Albie Morkel are set to join the coaching group. Meanwhile, former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has been entrusted with the role of bowling coach.

However, CSK is maintaining continuity in certain key areas; fielding coach James Foster and support coach Sridharan Sriram will remain with the team, albeit in new roles. An official announcement regarding the changes to the coaching setup is expected next month, following the team’s trials.
