After 21 years with the English county, Gareth Batty has resigned as head coach of Surrey to become assistant coach of Chennai Super Kings for the IPL 2027 season. As CSK continues to restructure their back-room staff, the 49-year-old will work under head coach Zaheer Khan, his former teammate from Worcestershire.
In 2021, Gareth Batty immediately resigned from his position as head coach of Surrey. Between 2022 and 2024, he led the county to three consecutive County Championship victories. After that historic three-peat, Surrey came in second to Nottinghamshire in 2025. The 2026 season proved to be much more difficult: Surrey failed to advance to the later stages of either the T20 Blast or the One-Day Cup, and they were on the verge of relegation going into the final rounds before finishing seventh.
In addition to his role as head coach, Gareth Batty assisted Oval Invincibles during their 2025 championship season before joining MI London in the competition’s rebranding in 2026. Following Stephen Fleming’s appointment to the England Test position and the subsequent hiring of assistants Eric Simons and James Foster, he now relocates to IPL rivals CSK as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the team’s support staff.
Gareth Batty first played for Surrey in 1998, which is when his relationship with the team began. He departed in 2001, returned in 2010, and held the position of club captain from 2015 to 2017 before handing it over to Rory Burns, the current captain. As a player, he became the joint-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket after taking over 500 wickets for Surrey in all formats. Over the course of his more than 20-year career, Batty represented England in nine Test matches, ten One-Day Internationals, and one Twenty20 International.
He amassed over 10,000 runs and over 1,000 wickets in all formats. I can hardly express how much Surrey has meant to me. Why has Gareth Batty recently joined CSK?
Gareth Batty’s transfer to CSK is closely related to the team’s choice to restructure its coaching staff after Stephen Fleming left to take the England Test position. Before IPL 2027, CSK added Eric Simons and James Foster as assistants, and Batty now completes Zaheer Khan’s revised support staff.
His immediate duties at CSK will include helping the team retain players before the November 15 deadline and helping to organize the mini-auction that will take place in Goa in mid-December. His appointment is based on his T20 cricket experience, both as a player and as a franchise coach with Oval Invincibles and MI London.
Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, acknowledged that it could be challenging to live up to the standards and customs of the best-resourced county in English cricket, but he commended Batty for doing so over his lengthy tenure with the team. Over the years that I have known and worked with Gareth Batty, he has demonstrated an exceptional dedication to the club. As a player and captain, he consistently prioritized the team and was instrumental in the club’s advancement.
