On Wednesday, September 30, Indian captain Shubman Gill etched his name in the record books in Guwahati. He powered India to an eight-wicket victory over the West Indies by smashing the fastest-ever ODI double century. Shubman Gill’s unbeaten knock of 223 runs off 133 balls anchored the second-highest successful run-chase in the format’s history, comfortably achieving the massive target of 406 runs with 39 balls to spare.

Earlier in the match, the West Indies had posted a formidable 405 for 7—their highest-ever ODI score—thanks to a spectacular batting display. This marked only the sixth time in ODI history that three batsmen scored centuries in a single innings.
Opener John Campbell laid a strong foundation with a blistering 101 off 65 balls, followed by captain Shai Hope, who scored his 20th ODI century with a composed knock, and Amir Jangoo, who played an explosive innings of 114 off 77 balls.
Faced with a daunting required run rate, India launched a fierce counter-attack. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma dismantled the West Indies bowling attack, sharing a magnificent opening partnership of 255 runs. Sharma reached his century (101 runs) off 72 balls and crossed the 12,000-run mark in ODIs; this was his 35th ODI century. He set a brilliant platform for the team before eventually falling to Jayden Seales.

Shubman Gill then stepped up the pace even further. After completing his century in 62 balls, the 27-year-old smashed a double century off just 117 balls, shattering the previous world record. With this feat, Gill became the second player in ODI history—after Rohit Sharma—to score more than one double century. Together with Virat Kohli (29) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (31*), Gill steered India to a score of 406 for two and simultaneously secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
