Smriti Mandhana has been appointed captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Over the years, Smriti Mandhana has emerged as one of the key players in Indian women’s cricket, contributing significantly to the team’s success in all formats. She is a seasoned international cricket player who has also shown leadership in both domestic and franchise cricket. Most recently, she led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.
Smriti Mandhana, who joined the Indian team in 2013, brings a wealth of experience to the position. As the team moves into a new phase and keeps building on the advancements made in recent years, she will now assume the role of team leader.

Smriti Mandhana made the following statement regarding her appointment: “To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour.” It has always meant a lot to me to represent India, and I will cherish the chance to now be the team’s leader. I am appreciative of the BCCI, the selectors, my teammates, and everyone else who has helped me along the way and trusted me.
Additionally, I want to thank Harmanpreet for all that she has done as captain. She has played a significant role in our journey and led the team with a great deal of dedication. I am aware of the responsibilities that come with this position, and I am excited to work with the team, pick up new skills along the way, and do everything in my power to advance Indian cricket.
“I congratulate Smriti on being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the Indian Women’s Cricket Team,” said BCCI President Mithun Manhas. She has played a significant role in Indian cricket for a long time and has continuously demonstrated the traits needed to take the lead. Her knowledge of the game and experience will be helpful when she assumes this role.

Although leading India is a big responsibility, Smriti has the temperament and experience to handle it. Her accomplishments as the Women’s Premier League captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru are another illustration of her leadership abilities.
