James Anderson’s 25-year relationship with his boyhood county will come to an end as Lancashire has confirmed they will not extend a new contract. In a meeting on October 19, 2026, England’s all-time top wicket-taker was informed of the decision; on October 25, 2026, the club announced the news to the public.
When James Anderson played his final Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s in July 2024, his England career had already come to an end. After that, he stayed with Lancashire and assumed the captaincy during the 2025 season at Old Trafford, the stadium where an end has been named after him. It’s unclear if he will pursue a contract with a different county or give up cricket entirely.
James Anderson posted his response on Instagram minutes after the club’s announcement. Being able to play for Lancashire for 25 years was a dream come true for me because I’ve supported them since I was a young child. If it were up to me, it wouldn’t have ended this way, but I wish the players and supporters the best for the future,” Anderson posted on Instagram. “I have always found it special walking out to play at Old Trafford and have some incredible memories of doing so, including the honor of being captain.”
Even though James Anderson, now 44, was kind to the club and its supporters, it was evident from the post that he did not consider the way he left to be his own decision.
Why did Lancashire choose not to extend James Anderson’s employment?
Following a challenging 2025 County Championship season, Lancashire’s new leadership team made the decision as part of a larger attempt to restructure the team. Given that they were thought to be strong contenders for promotion prior to the start of the campaign, the county’s second-bottom Division Two finish fell far short of expectations.
Recently appointed chief executive Richard Kenyon and director of cricket Paul Farbrace were tasked with rebuilding the team and establishing a new course. Farbrace affirmed that on October 19, he and Kenyon personally told Anderson that his contract would not be renewed.
Farbrace honored James Anderson’s position in the game. Without a doubt, Jimmy is the best bowler England and Lancashire have ever produced. Throughout his career, he has been an outstanding competitor with extraordinary talent and a steadfast dedication to raising the bar in every dressing room he has been a part of. I want to express my gratitude to Jimmy for all that he has done for Lancashire Cricket throughout his career.

He leaves a lasting legacy and has made enormous contributions to the team both on and off the field. “We will always be proud that he has represented Lancashire for so many years, and we have a great deal of respect for what he has accomplished,” Farbrace remarked.
James Anderson set a record for any bowler who is not a specialist spinner when he finished with 704 wickets from 188 Test matches on the international scene. His Lancashire record is equally impressive. He took 443 wickets in 112 County Championship appearances since making his county debut in 2001, and he was a member of the team that won the County Championship in 2011. He took 50 wickets from 40 appearances in T20 cricket and 83 wickets from 61 matches in List A cricket, demonstrating the range of his contribution in all formats.
